Not every beekeeper needs it in the same way. It depends on how and where you keep bees.
The biggest difference is where the beekeeper cannot reach the site regularly. If your apiary is an hour's drive from home, every unnecessary trip costs something: time, money and energy. The scale makes most of those trips optional. You go when there is a reason, not because you have not been there for a while.
With a larger number of hives, the value of a scale grows proportionally. Checking ten hives without opening them takes minutes. Checking them by opening takes hours. Even if you do not have a scale under every hive, a reference hive on a scale gives a picture of what is happening at the whole site.
Older beekeepers appreciate it for a different reason. Fewer physically demanding visits, less lifting, less opening in cold or heat. The overview stays, the strain drops.
Busy people, those who keep bees alongside work and family, have a similar problem to those with distant hives. It is not always possible to go exactly when it would be needed. The scale tells you when you really need to go and when it can wait.
